When White was given the assignment to draw up and project design Midroc's new office premises, the result was an unobtrusive building with a façade that alternates between sober nuances of caffe latte and champagne, and which has been named Sweden's most energy-efficient office building.
The site was relatively small to accommodate an office building of the desired size, with no opportunity to build to any great height. White's solution was for Jungmannen to be built as a unified compact block, extending to three- to five-floor volumes, facing in various directions. The structure offers such great transparency that the views from the building are fantastic. The balance between window size and floor area is perfect, making window sizes appear generous.
To contribute to a safer, more vibrant urban district, the building has been planned for flexible function. The top floor contains living accommodation, adding life to Jungmannen even after office hours – converting spaces on the ground floor into shops or restaurants would also be a simple undertaking.
The compact form of the building lies behind its exceptionally low energy consumption levels. The values are way below the Green Building limit and a full 57% below the national requirements for office buildings. Efficient insulation, a cooling sedum roof to manage surface-water, and ventilation and lighting triggered to come on when people are present – these are just a few of the energy efficiency solutions within Jungmannen.
