The assignment was to produce a concept for developing and co-locating activities within Færder High School, which is currently located at three different sites in the town. The new school is to be completed in 2013 with accommodation for 750 pupils.
Our proposal links together all parts of the school while also giving the outside world an insight into the activities at the school. Applying a flexible approach allows the existing buildings to be integrated with new ones. Residential accommodation is being built alongside the school activities.
The school marks the beginning of an exciting new town district south of the canal in Tønsberg. The overall vision is to have a vibrant interplay between the school and the town, the region's enterprises, a development area and a sensitive cultural environment within the vicinity of the school.
The winning proposal includes proposals for efficient climate-change strategies that guarantee low energy consumption. The buildings are designed to be capable of storing both coolth and warmth. The canal water is utilised for coolth in summer, while the reflective roof reduces the heating effect of the sun.
White has had many decades of experience in creating dynamic school environments and we are convinced that the school can and ought to play a significantly greater role as a creative hub and meeting place for the surrounding community. The new school in Tønsberg is an excellent example of this.
